With digital photography, much like film photography, much of the magic happens in post-processing. That's where you get to make the photo after you take the photo, so to speak. Post-processing is used for everything from tweaking all of the elements that help make a photo really stand out to turning a photo of one thing into a photo of something altogether different. Whether for artistic reasons or for manipulation is purely up to the one at the controls.
Looking like something from a color weather radar rendition, I used the post-processing controls from Canon to give this photo a surreal appearance with greatly exaggerated contrast.
Backing off the controls just a bit gives it more of an explosive look with the appearance of something seen by the Hubble Space Telescope.
At this point the photo begins to take on some familiar characteristics although it is still somewhat exaggerated in appearance.
And now, of course, it's apparent the photo is of a cloud backlit by the sun.
